Recent advances in molecular medicine have led to the development and application of technologies that will help better understand the etiology of complex human disorders. Elucidation of the basic genetic mechanisms that cause these diseases will result to an accurate diagnosis and better prognosis as well as identification of timely and appropriate therapeutic strategies.

This course is designed to apply advanced molecular techniques particularly cDNA microarray technology and qRT-PCR in the identification and quantitative analysis of differentially expressed genes in diseases.

The course will consist of the following:

1. Introductory lectures in techniques and applications

2. Laboratory work including: RNA extraction, spectrophotometry, denaturing agarose gel electrophoresis, first and second-strand cDNA synthesis, in-vitro transcription, microarray hybridization and scanning, microarray data analysis, real-time PCR, quantitation analysis, melt curve analysis.

The general outline will be introductory lectures interspersed with laboratory work throughout the course, with maximal emphasis on “hands-on” applications, including bioinformatics data analysis on computer
