About the Workshop

In this three-day comprehensive workshop we aim to cover topics relating to stem cells, development, and regeneration of the endocrine and exocrine pancreas as well as diseases related to both endocrine and exocrine pancreas.

The main objectives are to broaden our understanding of molecular mechanisms controlling pancreatic development and disease, the interrelationship of the various cellular components, the source and function of stem cells, and how to use our current knowledge for stem cell based replacement therapies for the treatment and cure of diabetes.

The major topics are:

Pancreatic development

Pancreatic stem cells

Pancreatic cell regeneration and reprogramming,

Disease genetics and mechanisms

Stem cell differentiation

Stem cells and pancreatic cancer

clinical applications of stem cells

The pancreas is a multifaceted organ with a unique genesis. It not only stems from a dorsal and ventral anlage, whose disregulated development gives rise to numerous malformation and, eventually, disease. It also harbours two different compartments, the islets of Langerhans, making up the endocrine pancreas and the exocrine pancreas, whose function in part depends on that of the islets.

Further, in contrast to the hollow organs of the GI tract, the pancreas has no easily identifiable stem cell with a pacemaker function in regeneration and growth. Nevertheless, the existence of a facultative pancreatic stem cell has intrigued researchers for decades and the existence and origin of such a stem cell, being it mesenchymal or ductal in origin, still remains a controversial issue.

The workshop will include an EMBO Young Investigator lecture as well as an EMBO lecture on Science and Society.

This EMBO workshop is specifically placed to precede the 42nd annual meeting of the European Pancreatic Club (EPC).

We look forward to welcoming you to Stockholm!
