The  8th EMBO/Annaberg workshop will focus on the secretion machinery and the protein-protein and protein-lipid interactions

that underpin it.

The importance of these interactions, and their downstream effectors, in mediating vesicular trafficking and determining organelle identity has been increasingly recognized to be key to understanding normal cell functioning and survival. Furthermore, recent advances in characterizing protein-lipid interactions suggest that there may be common themes in many trafficking steps.

The goals of this workshop are to gain a more complete understanding of sorting mechanisms as cargo is taken selectively into vesicles targeted for specific compartments on the secretory, endocytic and autophagic pathways, to understand how these mechanisms drive organelle biogenesis, and ultimately support cell growth and survival.

Only by identifying and testing new paradigms can we lay the foundation for fundamental research in cell biology and provide molecular explanations for human disease.

This workshop is being organized in memory of Dr. Dennis Shields (1948-2008) in recognition of his contributions to these research areas, and in the organization of past Annaberg meetings.
