About the Workshop

In recent years, a growing body of evidence has indicated that signalling molecules previously implicated in developmental axon and cell guidance (such as ephrins, semaphorins, netrins, and others) are also important regulators of tumour growth, angiogenesis, and metastatic progression.  Moreover, the literature on the role of guidance molecules in cancer is growing rapidly and indicates an intriguing similarity in functional paradigms and signaling pathways exploited by these different families of molecules.

This Workshop has been awarded the honourary title:

'EMBO 2010 Molecular Medicine Workshop'

The workshop will focus on the role of guidance molecules (such as ephrins,
semaphorins, netrins, etc.) in different functional contexts related to cancer. For instance, some of these signals are thought to regulate tumor cell growth and survival, cell fate and differentiation, migration, invasion and metastatic dissemination. Moreover they were found to control tumor angiogenesis and the function of other stromal cells in the tumor microenvironment.

Other reports have consistently shown that guidance molecules regulate not only developmental angiogenesis, but also the growth and maturation of the tumor vasculature. The stromal cells recruited in the tumor microenvironment as potential sources of regulatory signals will be also discussed in the workshop.
