EMBO-FEMS workshop on:

MICROBIAL SULFUR METABOLISM

15 - 18 March| 2009 |Tomar| Portugal

Venue

The city of Tomar, with its 44,000 inhabitants, is located 133 km from Lisbon, 82 km from Coimbra and 179 km from Porto.

Tomar was conquered from the Moors by the first King of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques in 1147 and donated later to the Order of the Knights Templar as a tribute for their help in conquering the South of Portugal. It’s most renowned attraction is the ‘Castelo Templário and Convento da ordem de Cristo de Tomar’, a combination of a castle and a convent, used by the Knights Templar.

The building of the castle was started in 1160. The convent was added later, as an extension to the castle. The Templar Order was dissolved in 1312 but their property in Portugal was transferred to the Order of Christ which was created in 1319. This new military order would undertake an important role in Portuguese overseas expansion in the 15th and 16th centuries.

The Castle and Convent of Christ were classified by UNESCO as world heritage in 1983.

Accommodation

The meeting will take place in the Hotel dos Templários, a privileged Hotel in the heart of Tomar, next to the historical centre, surrounded by nice gardens, overlooking the Nabão river. The Castle and Convent of Christ are within walking distance of the Hotel.
