We would like to invite you to participate in the EMBO-FEMS Workshop on Microbial Sulfur Metabolism.

Sulfur-metabolising bacteria, which are one of the oldest life forms on Earth, constitute a large proportion of microorganisms in nature and dominate in subsurface and aquatic habitats. Sulfur bacteria are not only major players in sulfur cycling but also important contributors to the carbon cycle, especially in anoxic habitats. Sulfur is also a crucial element for all living organisms. Sulfur metabolites and cofactors are used in several vital biological reactions and the biosynthesis of these compounds and their technological use is an important developing field.

In the summer 2006 the first International Symposium on Microbial Sulfur Metabolism was held in Münster (Germany), which had an enthusiastic participation of scientists from 16 different countries. This meeting focused on sulfur-based energy metabolism. Meanwhile, significant progress has been made in other areas such as genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, evolution, and organosulfur biochemistry that need to be disseminated and integrated to move the field forward. The 2009 meeting therefore has increased focus on these subjects, as well as new areas, including environmental activities and consequences of sulfur bacteria, biotechnological applications and biosynthesis of sulfur-containing metabolites.

We have found a nice hotel for the meeting in the beautiful ancient city of Tomar (a UNESCO world heritage site), which is about a 2 hour coach trip from Lisbon Airport.

This meeting will be a great opportunity for members of the biological sulfur community to meet and discuss the recent developments in this field. We will have several talks selected from submitted abstracts, a number of FEMS grants to support the attendance of young scientists, and a prize for best poster presentation.

We are certain this will be a great meeting and we look forward to the opportunity of meeting you in Tomar in 2009!
