About the Workshop

In the recent past it has become increasingly evident that stem cells are present in several adult organs and tissues and can generate their diverse cellular components.a

These cells hold great promise in regenerative medicine and a better understanding of their biology will be critical for their application.

A wealth of recent experimental evidence also supports the notion that at least many types of cancers possess a hierarchical structure whereby a minute sub-population of tumour stem cells is responsible for the development and the maintenance of cancer. These cells, that exhibit distinct features in terms of antigenic profile, proliferative status, self-renewal potential and drug sensitivity, may be considered the ultimate target of cancer therapy.

Despite the rapid progress of cancer stem cell research, numerous issues await further elucidation, such as:

  • complexity and heterogeneity of cancer stem cell compartment;
     
  • cellular targets of the transforming events; 

  • role of the microenvironment in the regulation of the neoplastic stem cells; 

  • control of survival, apoptosis and self-renewal: analogies and differences with the normal counterpart; 

  • homing of cancer stem cells and generation of metastases; 

  • strategies for selective targeting of cancer stem cells, and for monitoring their eradication.

These issues will be discussed in the meeting, that is expected to be of interest for stem cell and cancer biologists, and clinical investigators engaged in the development of innovative approaches for cancer prevention and treatment.

The official language of the Workshop will be English.
