Primary Airport |
The primary airport serving Grenoble is Lyon St. Exupery (LYS).
A shuttle bus to Grenoble ("Satobus") runs every hour on the half hour.
(See: http://www.satobus-grenoble.fr/index_en.html)
Journey time is 1 hour - The last bus leaves for Grenoble at 23:30.
The cost of a round trip ticket is 30 Euro (less if you are under 25)
Tickets may be purchased at the Satobus counter (or after business hours directly on the bus).
When you board the bus, inform the driver to let you off at the "Polygone scientifique" (or "Place de la resistance").
(This is the bus's first stop in Grenoble, the second and last is at the Bus terminus).
From there it is a ~5-minute walk to the ESRF guesthouse.
Follow the signs for the joint ILL/ESRF/EMBL site.
See Arrival at the Guesthouse below.

Smaller Airport |
A smaller airport, Grenoble St. Geoirs, serves a limited number of destinations by low-cost airlines, including the UK and certain northern European cities (See: www.grenoble-airport.com)
Note that flight dates are limited, and may not coincide with the EMBO course dates.
Buses (Transisere) from the airport to Grenoble are coordinated with the arrival times of the flights.
Bus journey time is under an hour.
Buses arrive in Grenoble at the Bus terminus ("Gare routière") next to the train station ("Gare SNCF"). See Trains below. |
BY TRAIN |
The main train station ("Gare SNCF") in Grenoble is located near the city centre, approximately 4 kilometres from the course venue.
If you arrive on a Sunday, it is most convenient to take a taxi, as local bus service is infrequent.

** Tell the driver to take you to the "Synchrotron".
See Arrival at the Gueshouse below.
If you arrive Mon-Sat, you may alternatively take the "Semitag" city bus no. 34 in the direction "Polygone Scientifique", which ends its run in front of the ESRF gate.
(You may also take no.34 buses marked "Chateau Sassenage" and get off at the "Polygone Scientifique" stop.)
Journey time is about 10 minutes.
Tickets can be purchased on the bus and cost 1 euro 30.
The last bus leaves at approximately 20:00.

The gate to the joint ILL/ESRF/EMBL site is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
Taxis and the No 34 city bus stop in front of this gate.
Present yourself to the security guard just past the gate (if you arrive late at night the gate will be closed and you need to ring the buzzer).
You will require a passport or identity card to obtain a site pass.
The guard will either direct you to the reception at the guesthouse, or provide you directly with your room key.
Please note that if you arrive on campus in the evening it may be difficult to find proper food, so it is best to eat (e.g. near the train station) before travelling to the ESRF Guesthouse. |
