About the Conference Series (3rd)

Following the success of the last meeting in Palma de Mallorca in 2008, we are pleased to announce the next EMBO conference on the molecular and cellular basis of regeneration and tissue repair in Sesimbra, Portugal, September 2010.

The overall aim of the meeting is to bring together a unique blend of people working on different model systems all with the one goal of understanding why some species can regenerate and others cannot.

A fundamental feature of systems that can regenerate is their ability to undergo scarless wound healing, an ability that is absent in adult mammals.  To date little is known about the molecular mechanisms underlying the interlinking phenomenon of scarless wound healing and regeneration.

KEY TOPICS

  initiation of a regenerative response
  role of endogenous stem cells
  plasticity of the differentiated state
  signalling pathways in regeneration
  patterning
size control and promotion of regeneration in a non-regenerative environment
This conference is unique as it is the only meeting that brings together scientists working on invertebrate and vertebrate models systems all with the one goal of understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying the unique phenomenon of regeneration.

Given the great interest and promise this subject holds in the field of regenerative medicine, it is of primary importance to continue to foster the cross-species,  multi-disciplinary approach to study regeneration and to encourage collaboration between basic scientists and clinical scientists.
