Pre-Conference Tutorials

Sunday, May 15, 2011

Two optional pre-conference tutorials will be held on Sunday, May 15, beginning at 15:00:

Introduction to Microscopic Imaging Methods & Introduction to Mathematical Modeling

INTRODUCTION TO MICROSCOPIC IMAGING METHODS

Philippe Bastiaens, Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology, Germany

Outline
Microscopic imaging of reaction dynamics in cells.

- Fluorescence microscopic approaches and their associated biosensors to assess reaction dynamics of proteins in cells.  Several of the microscopic F-techniques (FRET, FLIM, FRAP, FLIP, FCS) will be reviewed as well as analysis methods that allow biochemical reaction parameters to be extracted from these functional imaging approaches.

INTRODUCTION TO MATHEMATICAL MODELING
Karsten Kruse, Saarland University, Germany
Joerg Stelling, ETH Zurich, Switzerland

Outline
Introduction to modeling (purposes, types).

- Signaling in time: ODE-based modeling of signal transduction (ODE fundamentals, general model setup from biochemical scheme, analysis methods, dynamic phenomena such as bistability and oscillations, model inference).

- Signaling in space and time: PDE-based reaction-diffusion systems (general setup,
PDE fundamentals, simple examples such as kinase cycles, symmetry breaking, and spatial oscillations).

There is no fee to participate in either of these tutorials, but as space is limited, registration will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Please indicate on the on-line registration form which of the tutorials you wish to attend.
