About the Conference

The second conference in this EMBO series on protein translocation will focus on aspects related to the regulation, control and co-ordination of protein translocation and membrane protein insertion.

The aim will be to reveal new facets of protein movement within a cell that transcend the purely mechanistic aspects.

For example: how do translocation and insertion machineries discriminate between different substrates to prioritize certain substrates or to ensure that proteins are translocated in the appropriate order?

We will discuss the evolution of protein translocation pathways: how have systems evolved to deal with new substrates or new functions?

Another interesting and novel aspect of the co-ordination of protein movement concerns retrotranslocation, for example in the endoplasmic reticulum: how different are the import and export machineries and what controls the co-ordination of the two processes?

We will also discuss how translocation machineries can switch their operations from the purely translocation mode to the membrane insertion mode: how is the switch triggered and what additional components are required for the switch to occur?

This will bring us to the subject of the dynamics of protein translocation machineries and how the central core complex can accommodate additional accessory components to perform or maximize the efficiency of specific tasks.

Finally, we wish to explore the question of stress: what happens when translocation becomes difficult and what are the pharmacological and medical consequences of deficiencies in specific translocation pathways?
