About Primosten

a

Primošten is small town built on an island, only a stone's throw from the mainland (to which it was connected in the 16th century).
The principal sight is the town itself: its stone houses, churches and narrow tortuous Mediterranean streets. Its location within the maize of Dalmatian bays, islands and peninsulas, resulted in a town rich in tumultous history, once renowned for agriculture, now for its tourism.

Accommodation

The official hotel of the conference is Hotel Zora.

Full board (breakfast, lunch, dinner) is priced at:

- 85€ in a single room

- 58€/per person in a double room

- A third bed may be added and then the price reduces to 50€/per person.

The numbers are approximate, as they are calculated from the prices fixed in the local currency, Kuna.

Since the conference center is an integral part of the hotel, we strongly encourage participants to stay there. Stays in the hotel Zora at reduced conference prices, co-sharing of rooms with other participants or accompanying persons can be arranged during the Abstract submission process.

Finally, we note that the rooms that we have booked in the hotel are gradually running out, and that they are distributed on the first come/first served basis. Rooms are only reserved for those participants who provided a guarantee (normally with their credit card).

Please note that the accommodation in the hotel has to be arranged through our official travel agent Globtour (physcell2009@globtour.hr). This will guarantee for you the reduced price that we arranged for the participants, and also will allow us to organize your transfers.

All participants that are not sponsored by PhysCell2009 will have to pay their hotel bill at the end of their stay.

Zora („Dawn“) provides 3-4 star accommodation services. The rooms are equipped with a bathtub or shower stall, phone, colour SAT TV, air-conditioning (heating-cooling), balcony, ceiling fan, hair dryer, refrigerator/mini bar-extra charged at request, child's bed (up to 2 years of age) - free of charge, etc… It offers parking place, exchange office, concierge service, laundry, 2 terraced restaurants with sea view, seaside bars, souvenir shops, internet corner, sports grounds, entertainment centre, wellness boutique and a Kids Club. It is situated on Raduča point, surrounded by stone and pebble beaches. A half mile long stone-paved promenade is shaded by thick pinewood.  It is a perfect spot to enjoy a beautiful view of the town of Primošten, especially at sunset.

Alternative accommodation
*** IMPORTANT NOTICE ***

The number of rooms available is decreasing rapidly in  hotel Zora (conference venue). For all the participants who do not book rooms in the hotel while available, our hotel offers to organize alternative accommodation in Primosten (apartments & rooms in other smaller hotels/villas)

The prices are as follows:
apartment for 2 persons: 24 EUR per person
apartment for 4 persons: 19 EUR per person
apartment for 6 persons: 15 EUR per person
double room: 20 EUR per person
*Prices are valid for a minimum stay of 7 nights  (6.-13.Sept). For the stay under 7 days, prices will be  advised.

The meals can be provided in hotel Zora with other  participants at the following prices:
breakfast 8€
lunch 15€
dinner 20€.
that is, at 43€ per day.
(Reservation of meals at hotel Zora should be done in advance.)

However, participants may decide to arrange themselves  alternative accommodation in the town of Primosten, (there are many web sites providing information on accomodation  in Primosten). This may, as well, be arranged through  Globtour Event, the official travel agent of PhysCell2009
(physcell2009@globtour.hr).

In this case, participants will have the full control of  the accommodation price. Still they can have all the meals in the hotel with all the other participants for 43€ per day. According to their preferences, participants can also opt out of this meal package offer, and cater to  themselves, especially if they are accommodated in  apartments, which have furnished kitchens.

Zagreb Airport (350 km) – you should try to avoid this solution and organize yourself a connecting flight to Split.

Otherwise, you have to take a direct bus (about 5€) to city of Zagreb bus station and catch a first bus to Split from there.

By car:

From Zagreb (350 km): Motor highway A1 Karlovac - Split. Exit Šibenik.E 65 30 km to Primošten direction

From Rijeka (310 km): Adriatic highway D8 to Primošten or Adriatic highway D8 to Senj,

Continue on highway A1 to exit Šibenik, then E 65 coastal highway 30 km to Primošten.

From Zadar (100 km): E65 in Split direction, via Primošten.

From Split (60 km): E65 in Zadar/Šibenik direction, via Primošten.

By bus:

You will need a bus connections if you found an awkward airline ticket which takes you only to Zagreb, or if you are coming by ferry from Italy to Zadar or Split.

Regular  bus lines connect Zagreb (about 40€ both ways, bus station ) and Split almost every 30 minutes.
From Split (about 10€ both ways, bus station ) take a local bus in direction of Šibenik or Zadar. These buses should pass through Primošten.

If you find yourselves in Zadar, you should take a bus in directon of Split, which again should pass through Primošten.
However, you should check if the stopover in Primošten is planned, or you can always ask the driver to drop you off.

( The buses which use the A1 highway between Zadar and Aplit do not go along the coast and should therefore not be used to go to Primošten).

By rail:

From Zagreb to railway stations in Šibenik or Split. (The organizers do not advise this solution, trains are very slow compared to buses)

Kornati (National Park)

a a

According to legend, the Kornati, the labyrinth of straits and islands, was created from the fistful of rocks that were left over when God was creating the world.

He threw them into the sea, looked down and decided that they were perfect as they were. "The gods wanted to crown their work and on the last day they created the Kornati Islands out of tears, stars and breath", wrote George Bernard Shaw about the most indented island group in the whole of the Mediterranean.

Lacework in stone - Bucavac

Primošten vineyards are practically carved in stone with miles of drystone walls representing a real ode to human labour and persistence. The grape cultivation in this region dates back to 8th c. B.C, where vineyards were planted by Illyrians and the Liburnians, followed by the Greeks and the Romans. In the 7th c. A.D. the grape cultivation was taken over by the Croats just arriving in the region. A long  tradition has resulted in a local sort: Babić, which is regarded to be of a very high-quality.

a

Prof. V. Tadijević calculated that for a single stonemason, or farm labourer it would take 1200 years to raise these interminable drystone wall strings forming this 50 hectare vineyard, if this person worked 7 hours per day.  This inspiring achievement of generations of local labourers is presented with a photograph of the vineyards found in the lobby of the UN building in New York.
